If you live in an apartment but want to still own a dog you might want to look into Chihuahuas. Chihuahuas are the perfect dog because they are small and quiet mostly making them perfect for apartment dwelling. They oftentimes are hardly even noticeable, so you will have to be careful to watch where you step otherwise you might end up stepping on the dog! This is actually a problem with the breed more than you would think, but so long as you are careful you should have no problems if you choose to take a look at Chihuahuas that you can adopt.
There are a few things that you need to know about Chihuahuas however before you head out to pick one. The first thing is that some Chihuahuas can have a bit of a disposition problem. Their short statue leaves them subject to what many people refer to as ‘yippy’ dog syndrome, and unfortunately if they are not trained correctly they can be snappy. However, this is not the norm and so long as you are warm and loving with your Chihuahuas and discourage this type of behavior you should have no type of problems with them.
Small children usually do fine with Chihuahuas so long as you address the disposition problems. If you are worried about your small children with Chihuahuas then you might want to get a professional opinion when you pick up your puppy. Most puppies already display evidence of their disposition so if you pick wisely you can avoid having any problems with Chihuahuas at all. An educated breeder, trainer, or vet should be able to help you choose a puppy that is going to be great with children based on the way they act while they are still in the liter. The way they act when they are introduced to you is also a great overall sign of which of the Chihuahuas is right for you.
When you bring home one of the Chihuahuas you will same issues that any dog owner faces, so you should not worry too much about preparing for their arrival. Chihuahuas need housebroken just like any other dog, but they should not have that much of a problem so long as you are firm and consistent. Remember that when you are housebreaking Chihuahuas you need to make sure that you only punish your dog for going inside of the house when you see it occur. After a minute or more has passed, Chihuahuas will have no memory of the event so they will get confused when you punish them.
Finally, you need to remember that Chihuahuas are very small so they should not be kept outside for long without supervision. Chihuahuas should be allowed to go outside to use the bathroom like any other dog, but because of the small size of Chihuahuas they can easily become prey for a larger animal depending on where you live. Therefore, it is important that you supervise all outside activities to make sure that your Chihuahuas are not going to come to any harm while they are outside.
